Tossed Salad

The Secrest farm doubled in size last weekend - when we began a gradual takeover of city property by building a raised bed on our parking strip. Check out the sweet cedar box built by The Dove:

"greens greens the musical fruit..." wait ... that doesn't sound right

The tall guy in the middle is Lemon Boy - a yellow tomato plant. His vertically challenged neighbors are collard greens, lettuce and broccoli. The skinny little wisps on the edges are onions - placed strategically to repel insects and the lifted legs of neighborhood dogs.

We shall call you Broccoli McGee

In addition to starts, we planted seeds for arugula, beets and pole beans. It doesn't look like much now, but you'll be begging for a dinner invite when August rolls around and we're knee deep in organic veg. Hopefully the car exhaust and aforementioned pets won't be a problem for the wee greens.

The veggies originally planted in the front porch garden in March are totally rocking out with their leaves out.
lettuce pray...

Over the course of the last week we've dined on 3 salads made of greens solely from our garden - romaine, red leaf, and speckled oak leaf lettuces. Our front stoop is pretty much the Ballard Farmer's Market ... without the banjo music, patchouli soaps and Baby Bjorn-adorned preppy parents.

Spring Training

Dear Mariners,

We flew to Peoria to watch you play ball. We sat on the lawn and ate hot dog combo meals. We brought souvenirs home for Gram. We even learned how to pronounce Chone Figgins' first name.

Please don't blow it this year.

xoxo
